5. Way forward – September 2010 Actions

Actions - 2009 {and Time Frame}LeadUpdate-Sept 2010
Research
1. Draft outline to set up desktop research study on shellfish harvesting management options at other coastal sites. {SHORT} NEKSCAG COMPLETED
Research Report by student - circulate or make available (eg TCP website?)
2. Draft outline of further research required to investigate the sustainability of harvesting of shore life by organised groups at specific known sites around the Thanet coast. {SHORT - MEDIUM} TCP/NEKSCAG

 FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Spatial & timing of collecting (see 3); then
- Identify in more detail what is being collected at the main sites by the suspected ‘unsustainable group collecting’.

Monitoring
3. Continued monitoring of shellfish and shore life harvesters by Thanet Coastal Wardens and other reports from the public. {SHORT - MEDIUM} TCP/TCWS REVIEW DATA: 268 recorded incidents of Shellfish Harvesting collated (Oct 2007-July 2010) need to analyse to determine pattern: large sustainable group collecting generally thought to be low tides; daylight hours mainly at weekends from June to Aug (incl). Also need to distinguish between large group collectors and individuals.
Management Measures
4. Review, consult and revise the harvesting
Thanet Coastal Codes.
{SHORT - MEDIUM}
(TCP/ NEKEMS
stakeholders)
Proposed for 2010/11
5. Consider possible and identify appropriate measures for shellfish/shore
life harvesting in light of research {MEDIUM - LONG}
NEKSCAG and
NEKEMS MG
Authorities
Appropriate measures are likely to start when ‘IFCAs’ are set up (the reformed Sea Fisheries Committees evolving from the Marine Act 2009) - as they will have more
of a conservation role. IFCAs officially start from April 2011, so likely to be looked into from 2011/12.
6. Investigate the possibility for the use of
shellfish/Shore life collecting permits or other harvesting controls within NEKEMS {MEDIUM - LONG}
(SFC / IFCAs) As in update 5. above

Information
7. Produce temporary literature to clarify
shellfish harvesting [measures, and public
consumption within the NEKEMS for
- Volunteer wardens
- Notices/drawings for shellfish harvesters at the main organised group collecting sites
- General public: website information]
{SHORT/MEDIUM}
(TCP /TDC
/CCC)
It was decided that ‘Shellfish Harvesting Guidelines’ would assist organisations to get a better understanding of the current
complexities, rather than issuing a public information sheet as the first stage of providing this information before producing
one for the public.. (CCC/NE/help from research student)
{SHORT}
8. Review and revise information in light of
research and management decisions {MEDIUM/LONG}
As above As stated
Review
9. Review all sections within next two to three years, as part of the revising the relevant activity tables and actions of the NEKEMS Management Scheme in
2011/12 (for 2013-2018) {LONG}
NEKEMS
Stakeholders
As stated - review in 2011/12
